My humble attempt in this article is to explore the possibility of calculating life-span based on the method of determining longevity revealed from Jaimini aphorisms in the beginning of the 1st pada of 2nd Chapter. The factors involved in this method are:-
(1)Lords of Lagna and its 8th house, (2) Lagna and the Moon, (3) Lagna and Hora Lagna. This has been dealt with in Studies in Jaimini Astrology by Dr. B.V. Raman, which is a must for the seeker of Jaimini. Besides Vriddha Karika’s method of calculating exact longevity has also been explained there methodically.
I have evolved a new method of calculating life-span, on the basis of the term of life ascertained. I give below the specific reckoning of the 8th houses on the authority of Vriddha Karika, for its subsidiary use in the method of ascertaining longevity. I give also a table of Parivritti Dwaya Horas for use in the method of judging longevity.

Exceptions
1. If a planet owns both Lagna and its 8th house, take the 8th house from the sign occupied by Lagna lord.
2. If this 8th house lord is also the same as the 8th house lord, take the 8th house of Hora Lagna.
3. Lordship of Rahu and Ketu of Aquarius and Scorpio may be considered also (see pages 78 and 79 of Studies in Jaimini Astrology by Dr. B.V. Raman)
Method of calculation of life-span:
Add and subtract the Kakshya years of the planets in Kakshya places, as shown below, to 33 years if middle life is ascertained, or to 66 years if long life is ascertained.
Kakshya years of the planets: (Kalpalatha)
Sun = 3, Moon = 1, Full Moon = 6, Jupiter = 6, Exalted Jupiter = 12, Mercury = 3, Venus = 6, Saturn = 5 or 6 or 7, Mars = 2 or 3.
Kakshya places:
- Lagna and its 7th house.
- The 5th and 9th houses of both Lagna and its 7th house.
- Sign occupied by Atmakaraka and its 7th house.
- The 5th and 9th houses of both Atmakaraka and its 7th house.
- The 7th, 5th and 9th houses of Jupiter.
Rules:
- The planets associated with Jupiter also should be taken. Add the years of the benefic planets in Kakshya places shown above.
- Subtract the years of malefic planets in Kakshya places.
- Add if the malefics are in own houses or exalted in Kakshya places.
- Subtract if Atmakaraka is a malefic or debilitated.
- Add if Atmakaraka is a benefic or exalted.
Now I shall illustrate the calculation of life-span in the horoscopic charts given below:-
CHART 1: Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902)
Ascendant – Sagittarius 25° 30´; A.K. = Sun
Aries – Mars; Taurus – Ketu; Virgo – Saturn and Moon; Libra – Jupiter; Scorpio – Rahu; Sagittarius – Sun; Capricorn – Mercury and Venus.
Hora Lagna = Virgo (See the table)
Since two out of three factors reveal middle life, middle life is ascertained. There is neither Kakshya Vriddhi nor Kakshya Hrasa. Middle life ranges from 33 to 66. Hence 33 + 3 (Mars in own house, the 5th from Lagna) + 6 (Jupiter is in the 5th house of the 7th of Lagna) = 42 years – 3 (Sun, the malefic Atmakaraka) = 39. Vivekananda died at the age of 39 years.
CHART 2: V.K. Krishna Menon (1896-1974)
Ascendant – Sagittarius 10° 32´; A.K. = Mars
Capricorn – Moon; Aquarius – Mars and Rahu; Aries – Sun and Venus; Taurus – Mercury; Cancer – Jupiter; Leo – Ketu; Libra – Saturn;
Hora Lagna = Leo.
Hence long life is fixed from the two factors. There is no Kakshya Hrasa.
.˙. 66+3 (exalted Sun) + 6 (Venus) + 7 (exalted Saturn) = 82 years 3 (Mars, the malefic Atmakaraka) = 79 1 (Moon) = 78 years. Krishna Menon died at the age of 78 years.
Ascendant – Taurus 24° 26´; A.K. = Moon;
Taurus – Mercury; Gemini – Sun and Venus; Leo – Ketu; Sagittarius – Jupiter and Moon; Aquarius – Saturn, Mars and Rahu.
Hora Lagna = Cancer.
Hence long life is fixed from the two factors. But Saturn is Yogakaraka for Taurus Lagna and is strongly placed in Kendra associated with the malefics Mars and Rahu. Hence Kakshyakrasa. So long life is reduced to middle life.
.˙. 33 + 6 (full Moon, Atmakaraka) + 6 (Jupiter with Atmakaraka) + 3 (Mercury in Lagna) + 6 (Venus in the 7th from Atmakaraka) = 54 years – 3 (Sun, a malefic in the 7th from A.K.) = 51 years. My father passed away at the age of 50 years.
Ascendant – Pisces 4° 50´; A.K. = Jupiter
Aries – Sun, Mercury and Venus; Gemini – Mars and Ketu; Cancer – Jupiter; Leo – Saturn; Sagittarius – Rahu; Pisces – Moon;
Hora Lagna = Aquarius.
So, long life is ascertained from the two factors. But Moon is in Lagna. According to the aphorism 9 in the 1st pada of the 2nd chapter, middle life is ascertained from Lagna (dwi) and the Moon (dwi). Atmakaraka Jupiter is exalted in the 5th from Lagna. Hence Kakshya Vriddhi. So the middle life is increased to long life.
.˙. 66+12 (Jupiter exalted in the 5th from Lagna) + 1 (Moon in Lagna) = 77 years. Tagore died at the age of 80 years.
Ascendant – Cancer 24° 25´; A.K. = Mercury
Cancer – Moon; Leo – Saturn; Virgo – Mars; Libra –Venus and Mercury; Scorpio – Sun; Sagittarius – Jupiter and Ketu; Gemini – Rahu;
Hora Lagna = Scorpio.
Lagna is occupied by the Moon. So according to the aphorism 9 of the 1st pada of the 2nd chapter, long life is ascertained from Lagna (chara) and the Moon in Cancer (chara). There is no Kakshya Hrasa. Hence 66+6 (Moon in Lagna) + 3 (Mercury, A.K.) + 6 (Venus with A.K.) + 6 (Jupiter in the 9th from the 7th of A.K.) = 87 years 3 (Sun in the 5th from Lagna) – 2 (Mars in the 9th from the 7th of Lagna) – 7 (Saturn in the 5th from the 7th of A.K.) = 87 12 = 75 years. Nehru passed away at the age of 75 years.
Ascendant – Cancer 26° 45´; A.K. = Saturn;
Cancer – Saturn; Leo – Mars; Scorpio – Sun and Mercury; Sagittarius –Venus and Rahu; Capricorn – Moon; Taurus – Jupiter; Gemini – Ketu;
Hora Lagna = Scorpio.
The Moon is in the 7th of Lagna. According to the aphorism 9 of the 1st pada of the 2nd chapter, long life is ascertained from Lagna (chara) and the Moon in Capricorn (chara).
Hence 66 + 3 (Mercury in the 5th from Lagna) + 1 (Moon in the 7th from Lagna) + 6 (Jupiter in the 5th from the 7th of Lagna) = 74 years 3 (Sun in the 5th from Lagna) – 5 (Saturn in Lagna) = 66 years. Indira Gandhi died at the age of 67 years.
CHART 6: Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948)
Ascendant – Libra 13° 14´; A.K. = Jupiter;
Aries – Jupiter; Cancer – Rahu; Leo – Moon; Virgo – Sun;Libra –Mars, Mercury and Venus; Scorpio – Saturn; Capricorn – Ketu;
Hora Lagna = Aries.

Lord of 8th house, Venus in Libra (chara) | ¯ long life
Here Venus is the lord of both Lagna and its 8th house. Again Venus is the 8th house lord from the sign occupied by Lagna lord, Venus. Hence Mars, the lord of the 8th house from Hora Lagna, is accepted. Even then there is no change in term of long life got above.
Hence long life is ascertained from the two factors.
Hence 66 + 3 (Mercury in Lagna) + 6 (Venus in Lagna) + 6 (Jupiter in 7th of Lagna) = 81 years – 1 (Moon in the 5th from the 7th of Lagna and A.K.) – 2 (Mars in Lagna) = 78 years. Gandhiji died at the age of 79 years.
Ascendant – Gemini 9° 40´; A.K. = Saturn;
Cancer – Jupiter; Leo – Moon and Ketu; Libra – Saturn; Aries – Sun and Venus; Taurus – Mercury; Capricorn – Mars, Mercury and Venus; Aquarius – Sun and Rahu;
Hora Lagna = Virgo.
Long life is ascertained from the two factors. 66 + 7 (Saturn exalted in the 5th from Lagna) + 12 (Jupiter exalted) + 6 (Moon) + 3 (Mars) + 3 (Mercury) + 6 (Venus) = 103 3 (Sun) = 100 years.
CHART 9: Dr. Chenna Reddy: (13-1-1919 at 10:49 p.m)
Ascendant – Virgo 7°; A.K. = Sun;
Taurus – Moon and Ketu; Gemini – Jupiter; Leo – Saturn; Scorpio – Rahu; Sagittarius – Sun and Mercury; Capricorn – Mars and Venus;
Hora Lagna = Aquarius.
Hence long life is ascertained from the two factors. 66 + 3 (Mars exalted in the 5th from Lagna) + 6 (Venus in the 5th from Lagna) + 6 (Moon in the 9th from Lagna) + 6 (Jupiter in the 7th from A.K.) = 87 3 (malefic Atmakaraka Sun) – 5 (Saturn in the 9th from A.K.) = 79 years.
The life-span of Dr. Chenna Reddy is found to be about 79 years.
There are a few subsidiary methods of judging the term of life out of which two important methods are dealt in the pages of 106 and 107 of Studies in Jaimini Astrology. I shall deal with the methods for calculation of life-span in my subsequent articles. I have successfully verified the method I have evolved, in many cases. There may be a negligible percentage of failure of the method I have evolved without digressing from the standpoint of Jaimini. Success of this novel method depends on the correct assessment of the term of life. I have not allotted Kakshya years to Rahu and Ketu, since I have yet to verify in most cases where they are involved in Kakshya places. I request the esteemed readers to test this method.
